An Australian out-of-home pioneer, Michael ‘Mike’ Tyquin celebrated his 60th anniversary in the industry this week, surrounded by friends, family and colleagues. Having dedicated his life to billboards, Queenslander Mike has had a significant impact on the evolution and growth of outdoor within Australia, since his start in the industry on the 1st of July, 1959 with the purchase of a run down poster display company for $5,000.
He spent his mornings posting billboards, and his afternoons selling advertising space; after acquiring several smaller poster companies during the 60’s, he sold the business in 1970 into the overseas consortium which became Australian Posters (later known as APN) – fulfilling the role of State Director for the next decade.
However it was in 1983 when Mike started GOA, with then business partner, the late George Savage, that his legacy business was born. In the late 80’s his sons Chris, John and Peter joined the company and together in 2009, they introduced the first centrally controlled digital billboard network in Australia.
“Mike has personally helped shape the industry we see today. From glueing billboard posters by hand in the time before rolling machines; to being one of the first business leaders to introduce the technology for digital screens, Mike is an Australian giant of out-of-home even at the age of 81. We are thrilled to still be working with him today and to be able to access his wealth of knowledge and experience on a daily basis,” said Chris Tyquin, CEO and Joint Managing Director of GOA.
In 2017, Mike and his brother Brian (Founder of the Sydney company, Outdoor Systems) were recognised for their outstanding contribution to out-of-home in Australia by the world body FEPE, by being presented the Lifetime Achievement Award at their 58th International Conference held in Stockholm, Sweden. They are the first and only Australian recipients of the award in history.
Today, the family business legacy continues with Mike’s son, CEO and Joint Managing Director of GOA, Chris Tyquin. Recently, the business appointed Paul Menary as Victorian Director of Sales, marking a new era of expansion for the family owned and operated, Queensland based company.
